BackChannel Chat is a tool that a class can use to have a digital backchannel discussion, we'd like to share with you our thoughts on a scenarios that is well suited to back-channeling: class movies.
During the movie:
With a back channel operating during the movie the students can respond to any questions that the teacher may ask. Questions around the movie plot or the motivations of the characters, it works best with thought provoking questions.
Make notes about quotes or facts that are bought up in the movie, these can be used after the movie for further investigation or to help clarify a topic to the class.
After the movie:
This is a great time to reflect on the notes and questions made during the movie, often small points can help ignite a topic into a great discussion.
Once a more formal discussion has taken place in the class, get the students to write a one paragraph overview of the topic and put it into the backchannel. With the archiving and transcript tools avaliable in the back channeling tool, you'll be able to view the students progression from not understanding a concept to being to articulate the topic and reflect on its meaning.
Hope this gives you some food for thought.
